Blu-E
Blu-E is a company dedicated to the introduction in the Iberian Peninsula of state-of-the-art sterilization services based on electron beams (e-beam) and analytical disinfection techniques, combined with advanced R&D capacity in the field of composite materials for use in medical devices. The company is incubated at Instituto Pedro Nunes, in Coimbra, where it has all the laboratory conditions to carry out the project and afterwards industrialization.
R&D Strategy
The company develops internal R&D pathways in the design and production of advanced composite materials for medical devices that can be sterilized by e-beam (and others). We seek to add new skills to the Portuguese mold and plastics industry in the production of new technical plastics, namely for medical Applications.
BLU-E’ongoing work involves vertically integrating polymer device manufacturing through injection molding, casting molding, 3D printing and extrusion, introducing the critical step of sterilization and assembly of state-of-the-art components in the same industrial facility, obtaining a functional final medical device.
Enhanced Medical Devices
The medical devices of the future correspond to the interaction and articulation with advanced communication systems, sustainability techniques and incorporation of industrial wastes, sterilization capacity that meets international standards (ASTM D638, ISO 527, ISO 11137, ISO 13485) for these innovative medical materials.

Innovative medical materials produced with ecodesign and life cycle analysis techniques: from design to plastic injection through sterilization with e-beam (and others).
Advanced Medical Device Sterilization
Sterilization in the medical sector is regulated by international standards, with a special focus on the study of dosimetry depending on the material and the respective control processes. These requirements ensure that sterilization is properly validated, monitored and documented to meet the demanding regulatory requirements, set by the international standards ISO 11137.
E-beam sterilization converts electricity into accelerated electrons, enabling fast, sustainable, effective, and productive treatments for medical devices.
